Our oceans are beautiful. So what can we as boaters do to help maintain their natural abundance and protect our marine species?

The oceans make up 97% of the living space on earth. So far from being a niche interest, the ocean is fundamental to habitability of planet earth, therefore it deserves to be centre stage.

Ocean Stats

Who are the Blue Marine Foundation?

The Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) exists to protect our oceans we do this by creating large-scale marine reserves and restoring biodiversity. BLUE is a UK-based charity, established in 2010 by the team behind the award-winning documentary film The End of the Line, which brought the world’s attention to the crisis of overfishing.

BLUE is helping to protect the seas for future generations and aims to increase awareness through encouraging people to start thinking about the oceans and to start taking action to save our most valuable resource. One Marine want to share with you the Blue Marine Yacht Club Charter and what BLUE recommend boaters do to help protect our planet.

Blue Marine Yacht Club

The Blue Marine Yacht Club was launched in 2012 by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco. It was formed to unite the world’s yachting community in a clear mission to protect our oceans.

The BMYC brings a modern approach to environmental protection. It provides a platform in which members can express their concern for the ocean and desire to protect its future. By members joining, they are helping provide a legacy for the world that their children and grandchildren will look back on with pride.

All revenues raised from membership go directly to support BLUE’s work around the world towards its mission of protecting at least 10% of the world’s ocean by 2020.

One Marine believe all yacht owners can take a leaf from the yacht clubs charter, and if we all follow the guidelines, we can really begin to influence change today.

Anchoring & Mooring Anchoring & Mooring

Seagrass captures CO2and provides crucial habitat for marine life. Coral reefs take hundreds of years to grow and harbour extraordinary biodiversity and a poorly laid anchor chain can destroy coral or seagrass in minutes.

  • Never anchor on seagrass meadows, coral reefs or other fragile marine habitats.
  • Always use moorings where available. Eco-moorings are even better.
  • Never anchor in areas where anchoring is prohibited, this information is marked on navigational charts.
  • Anchor in designated ‘zones’ if available. If you need to drop anchor on the seabed, do so with the minimum possible impact on sandy/rubble substrate.

Endangered Species

Endangered SpeciesIn areas where whales and dolphins are spotted, slower motoring (10 knots or less) significantly reduces the risk of mortally wounding the animal if it is struck.

  • Drive slowly and carefully to avoid propeller injuries, especially in areas where whales and dolphins have been spotted.
  • Sea turtles feed, migrate and reproduce throughout the world’s oceans. They eat jellyfish and are especially vulnerable to plastic waste.
  • If you find a turtle entangled in marine debris, do your best to cut it free.
  • Around 100 million sharks are killed by humans each year. These fish play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem. We stand together against shark finning.

Eyes on the Ocean

Eyes on the OceanThe protection of the world’s oceans is a shared responsibility. BMYC members and our fellow seafarers are in a unique position to spot and report illegal activity. This is our watch.

  • BMYC members are encouraged to help environmental enforcement by monitoring for illegal/pirate fishing activities.
  • Upon siting suspicious fishing activity, especially in protected areas, call the relevant local authority and report accordingly.
  • Check with local authorities or the Blue Marine Foundation as to the specific regulations in marine protected areas.

Seafood & Fishing

Seafood & FishingOver 90% of large fish have gone from the world’s oceans. Stocks can recover if we change our eating habits.

  • Ask restaurants where your seafood comes from:
Is it local, sustainably caught and the correct season?
  • Practise catch and release sport fishing.
  • Avoid eating endangered species such as shark, grouper, tuna, marlin, and swordfish. See www.goodfishguide.org for details.
  • Ask for local, responsibly caught seafood from local fishermen. Favour small species over large.

Marine Litter

Marine LitterPlastic waste kills marine life.

  • Do not discard any waste overboard.
  • All waste should be disposed of onshore or stored onboard and taken home.
  • Always use port recycling facilities when available.
  • If you find discarded fishing nets on the beach or floating in the sea, pick them up and dispose on land.
  • Endeavour to reduce plastic products onboard, try to use reusable water bottles instead of single use plastic bottles.

Protected Areas

Protected AreasMarine protected areas means they contain more fish and plants, greater diversity of species, healthier ecosystems and bigger fish.

  • Anchoring and fishing is prohibited in certain marine protected areas.
  • Check marine charts or ask local authorities about the location and regulations of specific marine protected areas.
  • We encourage BMYC members to visit and support marine protected areas through entry fees and/or donations to the relevant authority.

Organic Waste

Organic WasteNever dump raw sewage into coastal waters as this can encourage eutrophication and damage marine environments. Seagrass and coral reefs are particularly vulnerable to pollution.

  • Utilise holding tanks or onboard waste processing systems if possible.
  • Dispose of waste and bilge water at a port facility.
  • Opt for protective clothing rather than sunscreen when swimming near a coral reef.

Diving & Snorkelling

Diving & SnorkellingIf you dive or snorkel, follow these tips so as to enjoy observing marine species and ecosystems whilst promoting their conservation:

  • For the duration of the dive, balance and control your buoyancy, avoid grabbing rocks or touching the seabed.
  • Never touch any living marine organism because they are very fragile and can be disturbed and harmed.
  • Report the presence of abandoned fishing nets or anything likely to cause pollution or danger to people or the environment.

One Marine wants everybody to enjoy the sea for generations to come to make sure boating is sustainable hobby by reducing our impact on the environment. You can find out more about supporting the Blue Marine Foundations and their aims and projects by clicking here.

After much debate, the judges have whittled the entries for this year’s awards down to a select group of finalists.

Every boat that has been tested and published by Motor Boat & Yachting magazine prior to and including the February 2017 issue has automatically been entered into one of eight categories then narrowed down by the judges to a select group of finalists. The panel will now review the finalists for the last time before selecting winners in each category.

The results will be announced at a gala dinner on January 9 and on mby.com, we will be pleased to attend the dinner and have everything crossed for a win!

Dinner @ The Old Quay House Hotel

ONE MARINE were delighted to be invited to a rather special dinner Fowey’s Old Quay House Hotel – just in time for the Cornish boutique hotel The Old Quay House to welcome a new head chef to the team.

Richard Massey has recently moved to Cornwall from Scotland, where he was head chef at Ullinish Country Lodge on the Isle of Skye for three years.

He began his career in the kitchen at the age of 16, and has worked in the restaurant industry for almost a decade.

Richard said, “I am looking forward to making my mark at The Old Quay House. I was keen to move down to the South West to be closer to family, and was also ready to take on a new challenge.

“My style of cooking is modern British: I like to take classic dishes and ingredients and give them a modern influence. One of the most popular on the menu is a Kilhallon beef fillet – a refined take on a Sunday roast, and supplied by local Fowey butcher Kittow’s.”

Using local, seasonal ingredients, and a taste of what Cornwall has to offer, is key to the ethos of the hotel and restaurant. This will continue under Richard’s leadership in the kitchen.

Martin Nicholas, regional manager for Providence Hospitality said,  “We are delighted to welcome Richard to the hotel as head chef, and have been receiving great feedback since he joined us last month.

“He brings experience and ideas to the role and we are looking forward to working with him to develop our restaurant here at The Old Quay House.”

The Old Quay House Hotel in Fowey has had updates made to its restaurant and bedrooms over winter. The team worked closely with local interior designer Kieron Cockley of Brocante, introducing new furniture and colour palettes.

Lighter wood tables and dark grey upholstered dining chairs have created a more comfortable dining space to complement the waterside terrace.

The Old Quay House Hotel is located in the centre of Fowey, and immediately on the water’s edge, with a restaurant and rooms boasting estuary views. Originally built in 1889 as a seamen’s mission, the whitewashed Victorian property first opened as a hotel in autumn 2003 following a full refurbishment.

Bed and breakfast rates start at £190 for a classic double, based on two sharing.

‘Q’ restaurant at The Old Quay House is open for dinner from 6.30pm to 9pm daily, and lunch throughout the summer season from Wednesday to Monday, 12.00pm to 3pm.

ONE MARINE are pleased to be able to support the Old Quay House and look forward to dining with Richard again!

One Marine Exhibit At Devon County Show

In conjunction with Devon Sailing Experiences One Marine were delighted to display a Invictus 240FX at the 2016 Devon County Show.

With mostly fine weather the annual county show was extremely well attended and the Invictus was extremely well received.

The Devon County show was the first time that the Invictus 240FX had been displayed to the public and she certainly stood out from the crowds with her blue hull and beige bimini!

Both Tom and Jamie picked up a number of leads from the show and are looking forward to a busy season ahead promoting this exciting new brand.

Thank you letter

Gabriela and Jamie have received a letter of thanks from the buyer of one of their recent brokerage transactions.

The client enquired on a Merry Fisher 655 only a matter of days after it had gone onto the market. Gabriella met with the client and showed him on board explaining the boats features.

Very soon after the client made am acceptable offer for the boat and the transaction completed very quickly with the new owner looking forward to using the boat in and around Falmouth, Cornwall.

I would just like to congratulate you and your team at Sunseeker Torquay, I recently purchased a Jeanneau Merry Fisher 655 Marlin which they had for sale for a client.

I was more than impressed with the professionalism in the way that they all conducted themselves with the sale, their attitude and politeness was fantastic. The sale was a pleasure with no problems and all paperwork produced as promised, Jamie, Tom and most of all Gabriella she was the first I saw and she showed me around the boat.

Gabriella was most helpful and is a credit to your company I would recommend and would buy another boat from your team at Torquay, please will you pass on my thanks to them all (the boat is fantastic)

Sealine F33 – Sea Trial and Survey

Unknown

April the 13th was the scheduled day for the sea trial and survey of the Sealine F33 ‘TARONG” despite the early morning Fog she was delivered safely to Darthaven Marina for her lunch time lift and hold.Surveyor

Michael Horwood was able to inspect the hull and underwater machinery before the retiree sea trial back to Torquay Marina. The boat performed well hitting a maximum speed of 25 knots.

Early signs are that the survey went well and in accordance with the sales agreement we are now waiting to hear back from the buyer of the boat and any comments he may have following the survey.

The Sealine F33 proves to be a very popular model on the brokerage market and ‘TARONGA” was price competitively to get her sold quickly due to the owner moving to a larger boat.

We are hoping that she stays locally.
