The Brexit Boat Buyer’s Guide: Navigating VAT Rules for UK Power Boat Purchases

Last updated: August 2025

When it comes to purchasing a power boat in the £100,000 to £750,000 range, understanding VAT regulations has become significantly more complex since Brexit. Whether you’re buying from an EU dealer, importing a boat that’s been cruising the Mediterranean, or simply trying to understand your obligations as a UK buyer, the regulatory landscape can feel overwhelming.

Important Disclaimer: One Marine are experienced boat brokers, not tax advisors. The information in this guide is for general guidance only and should not be relied upon for specific tax advice. Always consult a qualified tax advisor or customs specialist for advice relating to your particular circumstances.

At One Marine, with over 40 years in the brokerage business and offices spanning the UK, Portugal, and Spain, we’ve witnessed firsthand how Brexit has transformed boat buying decisions. This guide aims to clarify the key issues, but remember—when significant sums are at stake, professional tax advice is essential.

Understanding UK VAT on Boats: The Fundamentals

The UK applies Value Added Tax (VAT) at a standard rate of 20% on most goods and services, including pleasure craft. According to HMRC’s VAT Notice 744C, motor cruisers, powerboats, and yachts are specifically categorised as vessels “designed or adapted for use for recreation or pleasure” and therefore do not qualify for VAT exemptions available to commercial vessels.

When UK VAT Becomes Due

VAT becomes payable on a power boat when what HMRC calls a “chargeable event” occurs. According to the Boatshed Knowledge Base, this includes:

  • Sale by a VAT-registered business – When a vessel is sold by someone registered for VAT
  • Import from outside the EU – When importing a boat that hasn’t had EU VAT paid on it
  • New means of transport – When a UK resident purchases a new vessel VAT-free in another EU member state

The £100k-£750k Price Range Implications

For boats in the £100,000 to £750,000 range, VAT represents a significant cost—potentially £20,000 to £150,000. UK import duties on boats generally range from 0% to 12%, though the specific rate depends on the boat’s classification and country of origin.

Post-Brexit VAT Status: What’s Changed

Brexit fundamentally altered the VAT landscape for UK boat buyers. As noted by Yachting Monthly, boats that were legitimately purchased and kept in the EU while owners were EU citizens now face potential UK VAT liability when returning to UK waters.

The Critical Date: 31 December 2020

The Brexit transition period ended at 23:00 UTC on 31 December 2020. This date determines VAT status for many boats:

  • Boats in UK waters on this date: Generally retain UK VAT-paid status
  • Boats in EU waters on this date: May have acquired EU VAT-paid status
  • Boats that left the UK before Brexit: May require UK VAT payment upon return, unless they qualify for Returned Goods Relief (RGR)

Returned Goods Relief (RGR)

RGR allows boat owners to reimport their vessels into the UK without paying Customs Duty and VAT, but only if:

  • The boat has been in the UK under present ownership
  • The boat hasn’t been sold while outside the UK
  • The owner can provide appropriate documentation

Crucially, the initial deadline for RGR applications (30 June 2022) has been extended, but conditions remain strict.

Temporary Admission: The Mediterranean Cruising Solution

For UK boat owners wanting to cruise EU waters, Temporary Admission (TA) provides a legal framework to avoid paying EU VAT on temporary visits.

How Temporary Admission Works

According to the RYA, if you’re not established in the EU, and your boat isn’t registered in the EU, it can enter EU waters for up to 18 months under temporary admission, provided it’s:

  • Intended for re-export
  • For personal use only
  • You can demonstrate you’re not an EU resident

The 18-Month Rule

The Cruising Association explains that the 18-month period applies each time you enter EU waters. Importantly, you can “reset” this period by taking your boat outside EU waters and re-entering.

UK Temporary Admission Changes

The UK has recently extended its own Temporary Admission period. As of July 2025, new legislation increases the temporary admission period for foreign boats visiting the UK, though this doesn’t affect the 18-month EU temporary admission period.

Documentation Requirements: What You Need

Proper documentation is crucial for proving VAT status and avoiding complications. Essential documents include:

For UK VAT-Paid Boats

  • Original VAT invoice showing 20% UK VAT paid
  • Proof of UK customs clearance (if imported)
  • Registration documents
  • Insurance documentation

For EU Boats Being Imported

  • Bill of Sale – Proving purchase price and VAT status
  • VAT invoice – If EU VAT was paid, showing rate and amount
  • Import documentation – Customs declarations from original import
  • Registration certificates – From the country of registration

For Temporary Admission

  • Proof of residence – Demonstrating you’re not an EU resident
  • Insurance documentation – Valid for EU waters
  • Registration documents – Showing non-EU registration
  • Cruising permits – Where required by specific countries

Cost Implications and Planning Considerations

Understanding the total cost implications helps in making informed purchase decisions.

VAT Calculations

VAT is calculated on the total value, which typically includes:

  • Purchase price
  • Shipping costs
  • Insurance during transport
  • Any import duties

For a £300,000 boat with £5,000 shipping costs and £1,000 import duty, UK VAT would be calculated as: (£300,000 + £5,000 + £1,000) × 20% = £61,200

Hidden Costs to Consider

Beyond VAT, buyers should budget for:

  • Customs duty – Generally 0-12% depending on origin
  • Survey costs – For condition assessment
  • Transport and delivery – Particularly for EU purchases
  • Professional advice – Tax and legal consultation
  • Registration fees – For UK registration if required

Regional Variations

VAT treatment can vary depending on where you purchase. As the RYA notes, “All EU countries must comply with the provisions in the EC VAT Directive, however, some provisions may be interpreted in slightly different ways.”

When to Seek Professional Advice

Given the complexity and potential costs involved, professional advice is recommended in several scenarios:

Complex Purchase Situations

  • Buying from an EU dealer with unclear VAT status
  • Importing a boat that’s been in EU waters since before Brexit
  • Purchasing through intermediaries or at boat shows
  • Acquiring a boat with incomplete documentation

High-Value Transactions

For boats approaching or exceeding £500,000, the VAT implications alone can exceed £100,000. Professional advice becomes cost-effective when weighed against potential penalties or incorrect payments.

International Cruising Plans

If you plan to cruise extensively in EU waters, understanding temporary admission rules and optimal timing is crucial for compliance and cost management.

Practical Steps for Buyers

Before Making an Offer

  1. Verify VAT status – Request documentation proving current VAT position
  2. Understand total costs – Factor in VAT, duties, and additional fees
  3. Plan cruising intentions – Consider temporary admission requirements
  4. Engage professionals – Consult tax advisors for complex situations

During Purchase Process

  1. Review all documentation – Ensure completeness and authenticity
  2. Arrange surveys – Independent condition assessment
  3. Confirm delivery arrangements – Including customs clearance responsibilities
  4. Establish insurance – Coverage for transit and intended use

Post-Purchase Compliance

  1. Maintain complete records – All VAT and customs documentation
  2. Report arrivals and departures – Using the sPCR service for UK movements
  3. Monitor time limits – For temporary admission periods
  4. Plan ahead – For re-entry or extended cruising

Market Timing Mastery: When to Buy (and Sell) Your Power Boat for Maximum Value

A Data-Driven Analysis for the £100k-£750k Power Boat Market

In the world of luxury power boats, timing isn’t just about catching the perfect weather window—it’s about maximising your investment. Whether you’re looking to acquire your dream cruiser or sell your current vessel, understanding seasonal market patterns, pricing trends, and external economic factors can save you tens of thousands of pounds.

At One Marine, our 40+ years in the brokerage business and international presence across the UK, Portugal, and Spain has given us unique insight into market cycles. We’ve witnessed how political upheaval, seasonal demand, and economic indicators create distinct buying and selling opportunities throughout the year.

The Bottom Line Up Front: Autumn consistently offers the best buying opportunities, with sellers motivated to avoid winter storage costs and buyers benefiting from reduced competition. However, market timing is more nuanced than simple seasonality—and smart buyers and sellers need to understand the full picture.

The Great Market Recalibration: Where We Stand in 2025

The power boat market has undergone significant changes since the post-COVID boom ended. According to Boats Group’s 2024 Mid-Year Market Index, global boat sales dropped by 9.1% in the first half of 2024, though this masked an important trend: new boat sales actually increased by 5.3% while used boat sales fell by 12.4%.

Current Market Dynamics

Clarke & Carter’s 2024 market analysis reveals telling patterns in the £100k-£750k segment:

  • High-end resilience: Expensive cruisers are selling well, with luxury brands experiencing delivery delays into 2025
  • Mid-market pressure: Cost-of-living concerns are affecting buyers in the £100k-£300k range, with sales taking twice as long
  • Used boat strength: The gap between new and used prices has created opportunities in the pre-owned market

Summer 2025 data from Clarke & Carter shows the market remains active but with important caveats: “Boats are selling quickly (again with our caveat of being put on the market at the appropriate price) and there is demand through the budget ranges.”

The key insight? Pricing accuracy has never been more critical. Boats priced correctly for current market conditions are selling within weeks, while optimistically priced vessels languish for months.

Month-by-Month Market Analysis: The Seasonal Rhythm

Spring (March-May): The Awakening

Market Characteristics:

  • High buyer demand as boating season approaches
  • Premium pricing due to increased competition among buyers
  • Limited inventory as many sellers wait for optimal conditions
  • Dealer pressure as spring boat shows generate interest

Pricing Impact: Industry data shows that spring represents peak pricing, with premiums of 10-15% common due to seasonal demand.

Best Strategy:

  • Buyers: Expect to pay market premium but gain immediate enjoyment
  • Sellers: Maximum exposure but increased competition from other sellers

Summer (June-August): Peak Season Reality

Market Characteristics:

  • Highest activity but also highest competition
  • Premium pricing continues through early summer
  • Quality inventory as sellers prepare boats properly
  • Immediate gratification for buyers wanting to use boats immediately

Boats.co.uk’s 2024 analysis notes that in the high-end segment, “the more expensive the boat is – the better it is,” with new Fairlines selling so well that delivery extends to August 2025.

Autumn (September-November): The Sweet Spot

Market Characteristics:

  • Motivated sellers wanting to avoid winter storage costs
  • Reduced competition among buyers
  • Realistic pricing as market pressure increases
  • Quality preparation time for next season

Industry consensus identifies autumn as the optimal buying period. As one broker notes: “The end of the season is a great time to buy a boat… you find out what works in time to make modifications for next season.”

Key Autumn Advantages:

  • Price reductions of 5-10% compared to spring pricing
  • Motivated sellers facing winter storage decisions
  • Marine service availability for surveys and modifications
  • Better negotiating position for buyers

Winter (December-February): The Strategic Season

Market Characteristics:

  • Lowest prices as demand drops significantly
  • Motivated sellers avoiding storage costs
  • Boat show opportunities for new model previews
  • Extended preparation time for next season

Research indicates that winter buying can yield the best deals: “In most parts of the nation this is the slowest selling season for dealerships, and they’re looking to move current year models off the showroom floor.”

Storage Cost Considerations: The Hidden Driver

Winter storage costs have become a significant market driver, particularly affecting timing decisions. Recent UK marina data shows:

Winter Storage Costs (2024-2025):

  • Exmouth Marina: £9.50 per metre per week (winter rate)
  • Annual impact: For a 12-metre boat, winter storage alone costs £5,940
  • Additional costs: Crane-out/in fees, antifouling, winter preparation

These escalating costs create strong seller motivation in autumn as owners face the choice between winter storage expenses or selling. For buyers, this represents opportunity—sellers are increasingly willing to negotiate rather than commit to winter storage costs.

Brexit’s Lasting Impact on Cross-Channel Patterns

Brexit has fundamentally altered buying patterns between the UK and EU, creating new strategic considerations for timing:

Reduced Cross-Border Trade

Official data shows that UK goods imports from the EU fell 18% compared to 2019 levels, while non-EU imports rose 10%. This shift has several implications:

For UK Buyers:

  • Reduced EU boat availability in UK market
  • Increased compliance costs for EU purchases
  • Currency considerations with pound volatility

For Sellers:

  • Limited EU buyer pool due to regulatory complexity
  • Re-certification costs of £500-£5,000 for EU sales

Documentation Requirements

British Marine reports that post-construction assessments are now required for cross-border sales, fundamentally changing the economics of international transactions.

Strategic Implication: UK buyers now have enhanced negotiating power with UK-based sellers, as the EU export market has become more complex and costly.

Economic Indicators That Drive Luxury Purchases

Power boats in the £100k-£750k range are discretionary purchases highly sensitive to broader economic conditions:

Interest Rate Environment

NMMA data indicates that “inflation and rising interest rates” continued to affect boat sales through 2024, with new powerboat sales declining 9%-12%.

Current Impact:

  • Higher financing costs affecting buyer affordability
  • Cash buyer advantages in negotiations
  • Extended sales periods as financing becomes more challenging

Consumer Confidence Indicators

The luxury boat market serves as an economic barometer. Research shows that “recreational boat sales, often a discretionary purchase, can act as a barometer for the economy.”

Key Economic Timing Signals:

  • Post-election stability typically increases luxury purchases
  • Tax year considerations (March-April in UK) affect buying decisions
  • Bonus payment seasons create buying opportunities

Pricing Strategy: The New Rules

Market dynamics have created new pricing realities that affect optimal timing:

The Premium vs. Volume Trade-off

Current data shows a notable divergence: while global average sold prices rose 2.4% to £203,000, new boat prices fell 3.4% while used boat prices increased 4.2%.

Strategic Implications:

  • New boats: Better value proposition with manufacturer incentives
  • Used boats: Higher pricing power but longer sales periods
  • Luxury segment: Continued strength with minimal price pressure

The 300-Day Reality

Industry data indicates that “the average boat takes more than 300 days to sell.” This sobering statistic underscores why early, aggressive pricing and optimal timing are crucial.

Pricing Timing Strategy:

  • September launches: Capture motivated autumn buyers
  • Realistic initial pricing: Avoid the 300-day trap
  • Price adjustments: Plan quarterly reviews, not annual

Brexit’s Silver Lining: Enhanced UK Market Position

While Brexit created complications, it also generated opportunities for astute UK buyers and sellers:

Reduced Competition

With EU cross-border transactions becoming more complex, the UK domestic market has become more insular, creating:

  • Less competition from EU buyers for UK boats
  • Enhanced negotiating power for UK-based buyers
  • Market concentration benefiting established brokers

Currency Considerations

Brexit-related pound volatility creates timing opportunities:

  • Weak pound periods: Attractive for foreign buyers with strong currencies
  • Strong pound periods: Better value for UK buyers considering EU boats
  • Hedging strategies: Forward contracts for large purchases

The Experience Advantage

With over 10,000 boat transactions, we’ve observed consistent patterns:

Optimal Buying Windows:

  1. September-October: Best pricing, motivated sellers
  2. January-February: Maximum discounts, winter motivation
  3. March: New model year clearance opportunities

Optimal Selling Windows:

  1. April-May: Maximum buyer competition
  2. July-August: Immediate use appeal
  3. September: Catching final motivated buyers

Strategic Timing Recommendations

For Buyers: The Opportunistic Approach

Immediate Action (September-November 2025):

  • Prime buying season with motivated sellers
  • 2024 model year clearance opportunities
  • Reduced storage cost pressure on sellers

Preparation Strategy:

  • Pre-approved financing to act quickly on opportunities
  • Survey arrangements in place for rapid response
  • Clear usage plans to justify winter purchase

For Sellers: The Strategic Exit

Timing Considerations:

  • List in September to capture final seasonal buyers
  • Price aggressively to avoid winter storage costs
  • Consider storage costs in pricing decisions

Market Preparation:

  • Professional preparation to compete effectively
  • Comprehensive documentation to expedite sales
  • Realistic pricing based on current market conditions

Storage vs. Sale Decision Framework

For sellers facing the autumn decision point, consider this framework:

Annual Storage & Maintenance Costs:

  • Winter storage: £4,000-£8,000
  • Insurance: £2,000-£5,000
  • Maintenance: £5,000-£15,000
  • Total annual cost: £11,000-£28,000

Decision Matrix:

  • Hold: If annual costs < 5% of boat value AND you plan active use
  • Sell: If annual costs > 7% of boat value OR usage declining
  • Consider: Between 5-7% based on market conditions and personal factors

Looking Ahead: 2025-2026 Market Predictions

Based on current trends and economic indicators:

Positive Indicators

  • New boat sales recovery expected in 2025
  • Stabilising interest rates improving financing conditions
  • Post-election economic clarity supporting luxury spending

Challenges Remain

  • Extended selling periods continue for overpriced boats
  • Storage cost pressure increasing on sellers
  • Brexit compliance costs affecting cross-border trade

Strategic Outlook

The market favours well-prepared participants:

  • Buyers: Significant opportunities in autumn/winter periods
  • Sellers: Success requires realistic pricing and professional presentation
  • Both: Professional guidance increasingly valuable

Conclusion: Timing Is Everything

The power boat market’s seasonal rhythm remains strong, but external factors have created new layers of complexity. Brexit’s impact, changing storage costs, and evolving economic conditions all influence optimal timing.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Autumn remains the prime buying season – motivated sellers, reduced competition, better pricing
  2. Spring selling captures maximum demand – but requires preparation and realistic pricing
  3. Storage costs increasingly drive seller decisions – creating autumn negotiating opportunities
  4. Brexit has reduced cross-border competition – enhancing UK market opportunities
  5. Professional guidance is increasingly valuable – market complexity rewards expertise

The most successful market participants combine seasonal timing with professional expertise, realistic pricing, and strategic patience. In a market where the average boat takes 300 days to sell, starting with the right strategy and timing can save both time and money.

At One Marine Brokerage in Torquay we provide a premium and personal service tailored to you. Navigating the online world of boat sales can be frustrating, with multiple platforms, private versus trade sales, inconsistent listings and let’s not even get into the paperwork yet. We try to remove all the confusion and make listing your boat for sale a smooth and hassle free process. So you can sit back with your feet up and breathe a sigh of relief as we handle everything from initial photoshoot to enquiries, viewings, negotiation and post-sale paperwork.

You’ll see from our website we produce exemplary listings, with high quality imagery which takes understanding of each vessel, extra time and care to produce and it is this which helps your vessel stand out in the competitive retail environment.

Can we list your boat?

One Marine

So you’ve thought about it for a while, and you’ve decided to take the plunge and put your boat up for sale. It doesn’t matter why, we don’t judge, whether you’re upgrading, downsizing or quitting the game altogether. Whether you are looking to buy a boat from us, whether you are purchasing elsewhere or simply unlocking funds from your asset. If you want it sold, that’s what we do.

You like the look of the lovely people at One Marine and would like them to begin the process. But do you have the right boat? Is my boat too old? Too new? Too mainstream? Too specialist? Too big? Too small? Too far away? What if I have a sailboat?

Simply, your boat cannot be ‘too’ anything. But let us explore a bit further just so you’re confident we can list your vessel.

Too old – We usually sell boats dating from 1990 to present day

Too new – We can sell your boat even if you bought it yesterday

Too mainstream – As far as we’re concerned there is no such thing as too mainstream, we retail all kinds of manufacturers, Sealine, Fairline, Sea Ray, Bavaria, Bayliner, Cranchi, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Quicksilver, Monterey, Princess, Sunseeker, you name it, we’ll list it.

Too specialist – If you have a very specialist vessel, you might find success through owners forums or a specialist dealer, but we advertise your boat to everybody, and we think it’s a great idea to put your vessel in front of the widest audience possible. You never know who’s out there looking for boats like yours!

Too big – Certainly not, One Marine is a specialist branch of Sunseeker Torquay. This means we are used to selling big boats! And all the details & know-how that is required to do so.

Too small – No way! If you have a little boat, in lovely condition, with correct paperwork (we’ll get on to that bit) of course we will list for you! We sell everything from Jet Tenders and RIBS all the way to super yachts and everything in between.

Too far away – We sell most of boats from Exeter, Exmouth, Topsham, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Torquay, Torbay, Paignton, Brixham, Dartmouth, Kingswear and Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Plymouth. But if you don’t live in Devon, that’s okay too. You’ll see from our website that while a good portion of our listings are local, we can retail any boat from any where, that is the beauty of online marketing. We’ll make a special arrangement with you as a ‘distance’ listing, and we sometimes need a little extra help from you. But we can work together on this and make sure you as the seller are rewarded for that extra input. This guide is aimed at local sellers but most of the process is the same, read on and get in touch if you’re further away we’ll work with you to get the best listing possible for your boat.

What if I have a sailboat? – That’s great news! We don’t only sell motor yachts. Have you met our broker Jamie? His extensive knowledge and experience of Sailing makes a great combination for the Sailor looking to move on his yacht through an experienced sailing broker.

What paperwork will you need to see?

one-marine-paperwork

At One Marine, we like to do things properly. So this bit can be a bit tricky, as there can be much inconsistency across boat paperwork not only in the UK but in European countries as well.

Our contracts are all based on the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association standard, which protects buyers and sellers equally across the sale of boats. All our sales are overseen by our in-house lawyer and this really enhances the value of your choice to broker your boat with us. Gone are the days of writing a cheque or a hand written receipts, we make sure our brokerage sales are iron clad and in order to do that we will need to see the below.

What we need to see:

  • – Proof of ownership for the last 5 years. (In the UK this is usually the Bill of Sale historically)
  • – Proof of VAT status. (Usually this is the original invoice for the boat which states the VAT paid on the vessel, but we have seen other forms too)

Of course we love paperwork, and the more the merrier, this includes, logbooks, handbooks, Builders certificates and servicing and repair history, SSR registry if applicable, etc.

We will also need to prove who you are, we will take Passport ID and a current Utility Bill before completing a sale for both the Buyer and the Seller, again this protects both parties in a brokerage sale.

Still not sure? Get in touch and we can talk you through what we need, or better still pop in to the office with your ‘boat folder’ and we’ll take a look!

Strike a pose!

one marine photoshoot

So now we have the boring paperwork part all covered, now for the good bit! As part of our marketing plan for your boat, we will conduct a full professional photoshoot for each vessel individually.

In an online retail environment we know that the imagery is king, we understand that buyers, will rarely get in touch if your boats photo gallery is not both flawless and extensive. Thats why we focus heavily on creating listings that are not only loaded with information but also that are visually beautiful for prospective buyers.

Photoshoots take time, and this can mean hours for bigger boats not minutes. We use professional wide-angle cameras to demonstrate the space available on your boat correctly and provide potential buyers with an extensive image gallery to encourage them to visit in person. All our images are high resolution and designed to be viewed on a full device screen, either desktop or mobile. Our own website will automatically encourage them the be viewed in this format too, creating an easy ‘swappable’ show-reel. In the comfort of their own home your buyers will get an a true insight to your vessel through its images and the more they like the look of, the more likely they are to come aboard.

We like to shoot boats with the least amount of personal items on show. We understand that your boat can become and extension of your home and that you as the owner will have personal items on board to make you feel at ease every time you get on board. However, from the prospective buyers angle, it is better to see each boat as ‘item’ free as possible, this way when browsing they can begin to imagine their own personal affects in place and see all usable surfaces, lockers, sleeping space and more. This was a buyer can more easily see if your boat will work for their needs too.

You’ll notice on our website that all of our boats have a ‘Hero’ image. This is the main picture on their listing. This should be a full side or 3/4 view of your boat on the water, either on her mooring or ideally away from other vessels. Think of this as your ‘overview’ shot. It’s super important we get this right, first impressions count, and this is the first glimpse of your boat a buyer gets. And this is the only opportunity we have to encourage them to click further and read the full advert, on each of the platforms we advertise your boat on.

Creating your boats listing

Website Listing

Once the imagery is spot on, we move to the next stage of marketing your boat which involves creating an engaging listing that will encourage potential buyers to get in touch. Arguably with the shift to online browsing this is one of the critical elements to get right, and we take a little extra time and care to ensure this is done properly.

We want to know everything! In our consultation, we will need to know as much as you can tell us about your boat. From personal ownership and opinions, to the facts and a full inventory of exactly what is on board and included in your sale.

We will then create a personalised written description of each boat, alongside a comprehensive inventory so buyers know what to expect from the purchase. Features are important here, the more we can shout about, the more chance we have to sell. So don’t be shy and help us shout about how great your boat actually is!

Our listing will be created on our website and a link emailed to yourself for review, we welcome revisions and suggestions as occasionally you will think of something we have missed. This way your boat is represented in a way you are happy with, with our professional touches to finish the advertisement off.

Once happy, this is pushed out to all marketing channels and we begin working through the plan. All our boats are listed on the following sites which we have narrowed down as the greatest chance of making a sale on the UK and European Market.

Our Website | RightBoat | YachtWorld | YachtMarket |Boats.com | YBW.com

We have chosen not to bombard users with constant nuisance emails, we all have enough of those, instead the comprehensive newsletter is produced once a month for prospective buyers. We aren’t pushy or over communicative, which in our experience can turn prospective buyers off.

Feel free to sign up yourself and see what the next one looks like.

Marina Advertising

One Marine

You’ll notice our office is located on Torquay Marina. Situated between the town moorings and the private MDL Torquay marina too. We get a high volume of passing traffic of boat owners and enthusiasts past our office daily, so we are in the prime position for advertising locally. Remember we are the only on-site brokers in Torquay.

We display printed adverts in our windows to catch the eyes of passing trade, which is where your ‘Hero’ image will really come into focus.

If your boat is on the marina, we are also allowed to display our own ‘for sale’ boards on your vessel if you choose, which is important for passers by, you never know who is walking past your boat day to day!

We will try every possible avenue to ensure your boat has the best exposure and the greatest chance of reaching buyers in todays modern market. Our formula is tried and tested and we have hundred of happy sellers to show for it. All you need to do is get in touch to get the ball rolling!

Getting that initial enquiry

Part of our promise to you is to handle all enquiries on your boat. Whether they come through via telephone, email, website contact boxes, 3rd party sites, social media, WhatsApp or text.

We try to ensure there are no barriers for potential buyers to contact us and make an enquiry. This is why we have over 10 different ways that a buyer can get in touch. In the ever evolving instant world, with multiple contact platforms, we carry mobiles everyday to link us the brokers directly to your potential buyer.

We feel it is important to keep you up to date with the enquiry level on your vessel and as such when they come through, we will let you know, this way we can keep on top of how interested people are and make judgements accordingly if we need to tweak your advertisement while it’s live.

Our goal for each enquiry is to get that potential buyer on board your boat for a visit. We like to believe we are friendly, knowledgable and personable for each client that calls and like to make that first impression count. Confidence in your broker is just as important for the buyer and it is for the seller and we aim to deliver every time we answer a question.

Let’s get viewing!

This is the time where your boat really gets to shine. When potential buyers come aboard it’s the one chance we really have to help your buyer fall in love with your vessel.

At One Marine our viewings are conducted personally with a broker accompanying any viewers around your boat. A good viewing can take anything from 30 minutes to several hours in order to feel thoroughly familiar with a vessel. This time aboard builds a sense of ownership and allows each viewer to understand your boats features in person.

Viewings are conducted by appointment only, we believe a real buyer will be happy to stick by a time and date, so we do not accept on-the-hoof show-rounds and you as the owner will be advised every time we take someone on board.

We will not turn the key, play with electrics or start the engines for any viewing. We understand you might have maintenance work being carried out, and a sea trial is a job for a surveyor and not your broker. This also prevents people who have no intention of purchase, having a ‘boat trip’ on a nice boat under the premise of a viewing.

Trust us, we know how special your boat is and we promise to treat yours with the highest respect. Returning it to how we have found it each time, removing shoes indoors to protect carpets and leaving your personal property untouched. Keys will be returned to their designated safe place or dock office each and every time.

Occasionally, we have an enquiry who for an unforeseen reason loves a boat but is unable to view it in person. Of course we do not want to turn anybody away and limit the chances of reaching a sale for you. So, One Marine have developed the facility to provide personalised video walk arounds which can be sent directly to a prospective buyers email. Wherever they are in the world!

Negotiation

one marine office

We work for primarily for you to get your required figure for your boat. We know of course that is is often the case a buyer will want to put forward a discounted offer to you to get themselves a little bit of a deal.

Our promise is to put forward all serious offers to you, and we will negotiate with the buyer. This saves you the stressful task of managing a sales negotiation yourself, and we will act as instructed by you in each and every case.

At the end of the day, our goals are the same. Our ultimate goal is a happy seller and happy buyer. We have years of experience in handling this process and help you every step of the way.

Once agreed we will take a 10% deposit from the buyer, in order to proceed to the next stage.

Sea Trial & Surveys

On successful completion of a negotiation, in most instances the agreed sum will be subject to an independent sea trial and survey conducted prior to conclusion of the sale.

A survey is similar to those conducted with houses. An independent surveyor will be instructed to produce a report on the condition of your boat, cosmetically, mechanically and electrically. This allows the buyer to head into boat ownership with a thorough assessment of the boat they have purchased.

The sea trial and survey will be paid for and instructed by the buyer, through their chosen surveyor within 2 weeks of agreeing a sale.

Your boat will need to be in the water for the sea trial phase and lifted or trailered for a full survey to be conducted. Don’t worry about sorting all this, we can help arrange everything.

The idea of not paying the balance prior to a survey as you can see is to protect our buyers. As brokers we are not experts in the maintained condition of your vessel, and as we are selling boats up to 30 years old, the onus is on you the seller to be marketing a sea-worthy boat to the next owner.

Sometimes, a surveyor will pick up on an essential item which might need to be repaired or replaced before the boat can go to sea again. This is where we step in and help mediate the sale in this instance. To provide the best result for both the seller and the buyer.

Contracts

one-marine-paperwork

We said before, at One Marine we like to do things properly. So once we have taken a full balance we will draw up contracts in accordance with the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association standard, which will be legally checked and a few other handover documents to support the sale too.

You will both receive copies so you as the seller have a proof of sale. And we handle everything from our end.

The full balance deducting only agreed commission will then be transferred securely and straight to your chosen account. We understand that boats are a big purchase and because of this we use the most robust accounting system in the industry, for safety in the transfer of funds, seller account verifications and more. There are no hidden or added fees, and we don’t take any payment until this stage of the sale is completed.

And that’s it!

Silverton 38 Express for sale

Featured: MDL Torquay Marina – The Big Bay Eco Challenge

Our very own Tom Wills took on an almighty challenge and did us proud at the MDL Marina Big Bay Eco Challenge last weekend! We wanted to feature a little bit about the event, its cause and naturally give you the results too!

The Challenge

Sail vs. water pedal power vs. road pedal power vs. electric car vs. stand up paddleboard

Raising money for the RNLI in a race that will test the ultimate strength of Lee Constable participating on a Schiller Water Bike, the speed of a Bavaria sailing yacht, the arm strength from the SUPs, the pedal power of Tom Wills and the electric power of a BMW i8. Will the traffic be against electric? Will the wind be against sail? Will the SUPs fall off or will Lee & Tom’s legs simply give up? It’s anyones race.

With a start point of Brixham Marina to the Finish at Torquay Marina, by water and road, without using fossil fuels of any kind!

2019 Big Bay Eco Challenge Race Map
2019 Big Bay Eco Challenge Race Map

The Charity

We are all familiar with the vital work carried out by the RNLI, saving lives at sea.

For nearly 140 years Torbay Lifeboat Station has operated an all-weather lifeboat and today the station also has an inshore D class lifeboat. The crews have a remarkable history of bravery with 52 awards for gallantry.

The RNLI relies on public donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. As a charity it is separate from, but works alongside, government-controlled and funded coastguard services. The Big Bay Eco Challenge has chosen to support our local lifeboat station by taking bets for a prize draw to raise funds for the Torbay Lifeboat Station.

The Competitors

Tom Wills – Road Bike

As a father of 2 Tom has always enjoyed cycling. But in more recent years this has involved either towing or carrying his young children on his bike! Tom is confident that his ‘weight’ training will put him in a great position to win.

Tom Bills – Bavaria Yacht

Not to be confused with our own Tom! Tom Bills is a Master Mariner and a captain of the high seas, he’ll certainly know what he’s doing behind the helm. But will his experience and sailing skill be enough to leave everybody in his wake or find himself left high and dry?

Iconic Racing Driving – BMW i8

Some say he’s in with a good chance. The team at www.prestigesupercar.com have kindly asked their most talked about racing driver to pull out all the stops, no holding back here.

Lee Constable – Schiller Water Bike

Marina Manager Mike Smith has had to step down due to a broken leg he sustained at home, Lee Constable has taken over and as a semi-pro bike rider he should do Mike proud.

Sean White – SUP

A senior SUP instructor for 10 years and the owner of WeSUP Sean is one of the founding ambassadors of the sport. Will his passion of SUP be enough to see him across the finish line?

The Race Sponsors

A big thank you to all race sponsors :

Sunseeker Torquay | Devil’s Choice | Schiller Bikes | AXOPAR London Group | Ocean BMW | MDL Marinas | PrestigeSupercar.com

Most Importantly….The Results

1st GOLD – Iconic Racing Driver – BMW i8

2nd SILVER – Tom Wills! – Road Bike

3rd BRONZE – Tom Bills – Yacht

4th – Lee Constable – Schiller Bike

5th – Sean White – SUP

We are so proud of your effort Tom! And great fundraising from everybody who got involved with the event too supporting your local lifeboat crew!

The One Marine Team

Featured: Blue Marine Foundation

Our oceans are beautiful. So what can we as boaters do to help maintain their natural abundance and protect our marine species?

The oceans make up 97% of the living space on earth. So far from being a niche interest, the ocean is fundamental to habitability of planet earth, therefore it deserves to be centre stage.

Ocean Stats

Who are the Blue Marine Foundation?

The Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) exists to protect our oceans we do this by creating large-scale marine reserves and restoring biodiversity. BLUE is a UK-based charity, established in 2010 by the team behind the award-winning documentary film The End of the Line, which brought the world’s attention to the crisis of overfishing.

BLUE is helping to protect the seas for future generations and aims to increase awareness through encouraging people to start thinking about the oceans and to start taking action to save our most valuable resource. One Marine want to share with you the Blue Marine Yacht Club Charter and what BLUE recommend boaters do to help protect our planet.

Blue Marine Yacht Club

The Blue Marine Yacht Club was launched in 2012 by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco. It was formed to unite the world’s yachting community in a clear mission to protect our oceans.

The BMYC brings a modern approach to environmental protection. It provides a platform in which members can express their concern for the ocean and desire to protect its future. By members joining, they are helping provide a legacy for the world that their children and grandchildren will look back on with pride.

All revenues raised from membership go directly to support BLUE’s work around the world towards its mission of protecting at least 10% of the world’s ocean by 2020.

One Marine believe all yacht owners can take a leaf from the yacht clubs charter, and if we all follow the guidelines, we can really begin to influence change today.

Anchoring & Mooring Anchoring & Mooring

Seagrass captures CO2and provides crucial habitat for marine life. Coral reefs take hundreds of years to grow and harbour extraordinary biodiversity and a poorly laid anchor chain can destroy coral or seagrass in minutes.

  • Never anchor on seagrass meadows, coral reefs or other fragile marine habitats.
  • Always use moorings where available. Eco-moorings are even better.
  • Never anchor in areas where anchoring is prohibited, this information is marked on navigational charts.
  • Anchor in designated ‘zones’ if available. If you need to drop anchor on the seabed, do so with the minimum possible impact on sandy/rubble substrate.

Endangered Species

Endangered SpeciesIn areas where whales and dolphins are spotted, slower motoring (10 knots or less) significantly reduces the risk of mortally wounding the animal if it is struck.

  • Drive slowly and carefully to avoid propeller injuries, especially in areas where whales and dolphins have been spotted.
  • Sea turtles feed, migrate and reproduce throughout the world’s oceans. They eat jellyfish and are especially vulnerable to plastic waste.
  • If you find a turtle entangled in marine debris, do your best to cut it free.
  • Around 100 million sharks are killed by humans each year. These fish play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem. We stand together against shark finning.

Eyes on the Ocean

Eyes on the OceanThe protection of the world’s oceans is a shared responsibility. BMYC members and our fellow seafarers are in a unique position to spot and report illegal activity. This is our watch.

  • BMYC members are encouraged to help environmental enforcement by monitoring for illegal/pirate fishing activities.
  • Upon siting suspicious fishing activity, especially in protected areas, call the relevant local authority and report accordingly.
  • Check with local authorities or the Blue Marine Foundation as to the specific regulations in marine protected areas.

Seafood & Fishing

Seafood & FishingOver 90% of large fish have gone from the world’s oceans. Stocks can recover if we change our eating habits.

  • Ask restaurants where your seafood comes from:
Is it local, sustainably caught and the correct season?
  • Practise catch and release sport fishing.
  • Avoid eating endangered species such as shark, grouper, tuna, marlin, and swordfish. See www.goodfishguide.org for details.
  • Ask for local, responsibly caught seafood from local fishermen. Favour small species over large.

Marine Litter

Marine LitterPlastic waste kills marine life.

  • Do not discard any waste overboard.
  • All waste should be disposed of onshore or stored onboard and taken home.
  • Always use port recycling facilities when available.
  • If you find discarded fishing nets on the beach or floating in the sea, pick them up and dispose on land.
  • Endeavour to reduce plastic products onboard, try to use reusable water bottles instead of single use plastic bottles.

Protected Areas

Protected AreasMarine protected areas means they contain more fish and plants, greater diversity of species, healthier ecosystems and bigger fish.

  • Anchoring and fishing is prohibited in certain marine protected areas.
  • Check marine charts or ask local authorities about the location and regulations of specific marine protected areas.
  • We encourage BMYC members to visit and support marine protected areas through entry fees and/or donations to the relevant authority.

Organic Waste

Organic WasteNever dump raw sewage into coastal waters as this can encourage eutrophication and damage marine environments. Seagrass and coral reefs are particularly vulnerable to pollution.

  • Utilise holding tanks or onboard waste processing systems if possible.
  • Dispose of waste and bilge water at a port facility.
  • Opt for protective clothing rather than sunscreen when swimming near a coral reef.

Diving & Snorkelling

Diving & SnorkellingIf you dive or snorkel, follow these tips so as to enjoy observing marine species and ecosystems whilst promoting their conservation:

  • For the duration of the dive, balance and control your buoyancy, avoid grabbing rocks or touching the seabed.
  • Never touch any living marine organism because they are very fragile and can be disturbed and harmed.
  • Report the presence of abandoned fishing nets or anything likely to cause pollution or danger to people or the environment.

One Marine wants everybody to enjoy the sea for generations to come to make sure boating is sustainable hobby by reducing our impact on the environment. You can find out more about supporting the Blue Marine Foundations and their aims and projects by clicking here.
